Abstract

A place comprises a geographical space resulting from human action and responsible for shaping behaviors. Connections formed with places considered to be special are called attachment and accompany individuals in all stage of life. Rural landowners constitute a group that considers its land to be a unique place. Therefore, the aim of this article is to identify categories of emotional bonds present in the individual-rural place relationship. The methodology is based on a bibliographical review of eleven studies published in international databases. From the results analysis, six categories emerged based on the theoretical comparison of the literature with the findings of the articles analyzed. The categories present bonds established between individuals and the rural place: the environment category comprises natural and physical characteristics; the community category includes the relationship with people; the rootedness category is composed of the feelings aroused by the place; the family category is made up of the history built in the place; the financial return category is composed of the income obtained with the place; and the rural life category considers the attraction of the lifestyle in the place. In effect, these results indicate an important agenda for future research on attachment to a place in the sense of outlining a promising theoretical-conceptual horizon concerning the topic.
