Information accessibility and senior citizen health: an analysis of the Ministry of Health portal

Abstract

This study examined informational accessibility on elderly health in Brazil’s Ministry of Health portal (2022–2023). Using Content Analysis on 23 news articles retrieved with the descriptors “Elderly Health”, “Ageing”, and “Older Person”, five thematic categories were identified: vaccination, professional training, healthy habits, rehabilitation, and ageing-related complications. A curative biomedical discourse prevailed, with emphasis on COVID-19 vaccination and fall prevention. Technical language and the absence of accessibility features (e.g., audio description, simplified text) limit public understanding. Relevant gaps were found in mental health, palliative care, and inclusion of Indigenous, rural, and LGBTQIA+ elderly people. Findings suggest the need to revise institutional communication to enhance inclusivity and ensure that information reflects the diverse realities of older adults.

Foi membro do Centro Acadêmico Dr. Raul Bacellar e da Liga Acadêmica de Geriatria e Gerontologia do Piauí.
